They’re good for the size, but they’re terrible for primary computers and if you want to watch movies (or use any kind of disc). The small keyboard makes them awkward to type papers on, but they can handle MS Word.

I bought one and loaded Word, Powerpoint, access, and Excel from office 2007. It works flawlessly. You can watch movies but if you want it for movies I would suggest a regular laptop. There are some priced close to the Mini. I chose the mini for ultimate portability. I can grab it and go to the library for writing papers and research.

The only upgrade I will be doing is adding a $20 memory stick. Anything higher for an upgrade makes no sense for a $350 machine.

Before you pay for Microsoft Office, please try OpenOffice ( ). OpenOffice is free, and it is compatible with all versions of Microsoft Office. You just have to use “Save as” instead of “Save” in order to save in the Microsoft format.

Netbooks don’t come with a DVD drive, so you’d have to get an external one, but it wouldn’t be very conveniently portable.
