Wii as a media center
![]()
We continue with our special consoles as media centers, we started with the Xbox 360, and we continue now with the Nintendo Wii that is, a priori, which comes less prepared for this purpose.
Although the process is not very intuitive, the Wii can work, without anything extra, like a multimedia center, playing videos, music and photos you have stored on an SD card, which incorporates the relevant reader.
However, the limitations of this approach are quite important. The reproduction is made from photos of the canal, which, despite the name, offers more options. However, the videos must be in. MOV and not all of them work.
The first version of the channel supported files in MP3 format, but then Nintendo dropped this support and replaced it with AAC compatibility. The update was not mandatory, so if we will have even earlier this medium.
As we see, these options are very limited, but fortunately there are a few more. The first is to use the browser to play content stored on your computer in streaming mode. That compels us to have the Internet Channel, which is to pay, although those who were able to get to the top downloaded for free.

There are many applications for this process, among which we find TVersity for Wii Transfer for Windows and Mac.
The first is compatible with multiple devices, not only with the Wii, while both allow playback of multiple formats, making the conversion to the flight of these and sending them to flash in the console. TVersity is free, while Wii Transfer has a cost of 19 dollars.

If we like the risk we have yet another option, which is to do a Jailbreak to the console, that is, activate a way that allows us to run applications in her home. With this we have the ability to install Mplayer on our Wii, which opens a lot of possibilities, such as connecting a USB external disk to play the content from it.
Sure, it’s a risky option and it probably will be leaving us with no guarantee, as well as Nintendo tries to prevent it with regular updates of the console. Anyway, once proven this is the best choice of all described, although it lacks something Mplayer optimization and in some sequences may be a bit stuck.
This also allows playback of DVDs, something the console, despite having the relevant reader does not allow them natively.
