ctl 2go pc netbook Netbook: Acer and Asus hold almost 70% of the market

The Netbook market represents a real opportunity for manufacturers of PCs. According to a study by research firm and consultancy Display Search, 14 million ultra-portables have been sold this year, against just one million units in 2007. Nothing that during the third quarter, 5.6 million Netbook have found takers.

Display Search also stressed that all major manufacturers have now made their entry into the market netBook, with the exception of Apple. But only two manufacturers – Acer and Asus – have fully conquered this sector. They are in fact alone nearly 70% of the Netbook.

Acer gets a market share in the world of about 38.3%, against 30.3% for its competitor Asus. Thus, the Acer Aspire One has sold 2.15 million copies. Against 1.7 million for Asus EeePC have been passed at the end of the third quarter.

For others, the crumbs

HP (Mini Note) and MSI (Wind) complete the quartet head, but with only respectively 5.8 and 5.7% market share. Their breakthrough is significant, although these figures have nothing to do with the scores recorded by Acer and Asus.

Other manufacturers still occupy a marginal position in the market for Netbook, both Dell and Inspiron Mini (2.8% market share), and Medion Akoya (2.3%), and Lenovo IdeaPad (0 , 7%) or Toshiba and its NB100 (0.5%). But it should also be noted that the last two builders arrived late on the market: Lenovo took position in August and Toshiba followed in September.

The firm Display Search is optimistic about the future of Netbook: “We expect the market Netbook represents about 16% of portable PC market by 2011″, assesses John F. Jacobs, an analyst at Display Search.

During the first Netbook World Forum held last week, IDC presented a study highlighting the dynamism of this segment of the market.
