Yahoo unveiled a new set of tools designed to block junk e-mail on its Web mail service. Mark Risher, head of the fight against spam at Yahoo, introduced some of these new tools of protection in a note published Tuesday on the blog of the Internet firm.

“At Yahoo, we take spam very seriously,” he writes. “It is a huge challenge because hackers are constantly trying to make money with their scams, but we pledge to protect yourself online.”

Among the tools placed in front in the battle include a cluster that runs Hadoop [a collection of free software library written in Java useful for creating distributed file systems expanded, according to Wikipedia, nldr]. This cluster, based on thousands of interconnected computers, is used to detect and filter spam.

Mark Risher also mentioned a number of Yahoo with partner companies. For example, the start-up Abaca working with Yahoo to develop new tools for behavioral analysis to block spam.

The e-mail specialist Return Path is, meanwhile, embarked on a new service designed to eliminate false positives in spam filters.

Opening the service to outside developers

Redefining and improving the functioning of the Yahoo webmail were the main work in the reconstruction effort continues to firm.

Beginning in 2008, Jerry Yang, then CEO of Yahoo, has unveiled an updated e-mail service in the heart of a new Web strategy. In December, the Internet Group has brought new changes to the service, after announcing its intention to open Yahoo Mail external developers.
